With everyone suddenly working and learning from home, video conferencing became critical infrastructure. I forked BigBlueButton, an open-source web conferencing system. BBB is particularly popular in education - it has features like virtual whiteboards, breakout rooms, and recording that make it well-suited for online learning.
Why Open Source Matters
The pandemic highlighted why open-source software matters. When Zoom had security issues and capacity problems, organizations needed alternatives they could host themselves. Self-hosted solutions like BigBlueButton provided that option.
Rapid Adaptation
This quarter was about rapid adaptation. Software that might have taken months to evaluate and deploy was being implemented in days. The urgency was unlike anything I’d experienced in my career.
